Cyclones

1. TECHNOLOGY TYPE
Dry filtering.

2. RETAINABLE IMPURITIES
Generally, dust particles.

3. RETENTION EFFICIENCY
Retainability is highly dependent on particle size and specific mass. Under normal circumstances, efficiency varies between 85% and 95%.

4. EQUIPMENT AND PROCESS DESCRIPTION
This type of equipment is suitable for filtering dust particles of specific mass higher than 300 kg/m3 and coarse size (size greater than 10 μm), and particles of specific mass higher than 1000-1500 kg/m3 and size greater than 50 μm, present in the atmosphere in high concentration. Cyclone separation efficiency can range from 85% to 95%. In situations where high filtering efficiency is required, cyclones are particularly useful as preliminary filtration units, placed before secondary filters of higher efficiency. In cases in which dust concentration in the air is especially high, installing a pre-filtration cyclone before the final filter achieves a significant preliminary decrease in dust concentration, resulting in optimal overall filtering efficiency, as well as ensuring a greater degree of protection for the final filter. In the case of pneumatic transportation, where airflow particle concentration is especially high, using a separation cyclone on its own is sufficient to achieve acceptable levels of efficiency.

Advantages:
– low pressure drops (60-70 mm H2O)
– no maintenance costs
– low operating costs
– low cost of installation

5. APPLICABLE FIELDS
Cyclones may be employed in any industrial process involving generation of large amounts of dust: wood processing, metal processing, animal husbandry, pneumatic transportation, etc.
